MY PRACTICE OF REST & RELEASE

MY PRACTICE OF REST & RELEASE

Installation, April- August 2022: Shown at ICA SF, and Root Division

A Practice of Rest and Release was an installation series based on death and prayer rituals.

I've noticed that we tend to use the idea “being present” to leverage a sense of fear or the possibility of regret at the end of our lives, but I wanted to challenge that by accepting, celebrating, death and what comes with it.

I also wanted to highlight the wonder of being reborn multiple times during "our waking lives."

I encouraged viewers to interact with a honey jar I assembled. The symbolism/act is a reference to an altar call that was traditional in my Baptist upbringing, where folks were given an open space to lay down/sit with/release their burdens

Accompanying the altar I made a 3-Track EP; with each showing of the altar the audio was updated, until it was finished. Showing the music at varying stages of being made was another nod to rebirth, implying that each prior version was an ephemeral, necessary milestone- just like past versions of ourselves.
